Science Center to hold free open house at Jupiter satellite location

The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium plans to hold a free open house for the public on Saturday at its new satellite location in Jupiter’s Downtown Abacoa.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature the science center’s Discovery Dome Mobile Planetarium, Lego free play, and Robotics lessons.

The Science center plans to use the 2,000-square-foot studio space to hold youth camps, classes and other special events. The “STEM Studio” is located on Abacoa’s Main Street near its intersection with Crescent Drive near Crux Coffee Roasters, officials with the science center and Downtown Abacoa said.

The center partnered with Bricks 4 Kidz, a national organization dedicated to teaching the fundamentals of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), to create the studio space. Both groups plan share the studio.

Bricks 4 Kidz will contribute to the studio’s workshops, classes and camps by providing Lego bricks, motors, robotics and other hands-on learning experiences. The space will also be used by other community partners.

Here is a schedule of events planned at the open house:

10am – 12 noon – “Circuit Play” –  Squishy Circuits, LED Wear-ables, Little Bits

12 noon – 1:45pm – Robotics (Lego Mindstorms, LEGO WeDO, cubelets, Mips, Ozobots)

2 – 4pm Discovery Dome Mobile Planetarium:

*         2pm – Losing the Dark and Constellations

*         2:30 – One World One Sky

*         3pm – Back to the Moon for Good

*         3:30pm Black Holes
